Android Things: The IoT Platform for Everyone (GDD Europe '17)

Image
Android Things: The IoT Platform for Everyone (GDD Europe '17) Android Things is Google’s Internet of Things (IoT) platform that is based on the Android operating system. In this video, Rebecca Franks covers the basics of getting started with the platform and how any developer without electronics experience can build IoT apps with Android Things. She presents a few use cases and examples, along with an overview of how you can use the existing Android libraries with your next IoT project.

OnePlus Releases OxygenOS 4.5 OTA For OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T

Image
OnePlus has just announced the release of OxtgenOS 4.5 OTA for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. The new update brings in a number of new additions to the stable OxygenOS for these devices, as well as various system stability and battery improvements. Lift up Display, a feature previously limited to the OxygenOS beta channel has now finally made it to the stable version with this new update. That means users can now peek at their notifications simply by lifting the device up from the surface, without actually waking up the device by double tapping the screen or pressing the power button. The new update also adds a Gaming Do Not Disturb mode to help gamers better focus on their gameplay by effectively blocking out heads-up notifications and sounds. This last addition has been in the stable ROM of the OnePlus 5 since the device arrived, so it’s nice to see it get to the hands of OnePlus 3 and 3T owners. Other notable changes include the ability to show network speed in the st

Report: Incredibly Accurate GPS Chips are Coming to Smartphones Next Year

Image
GPS on smartphones today can be hit or miss for a lot of people. There are times in which it is actually right on point, but then there are other times that it seems to pin you on a completely different street, usually taking far too long to correct itself. Android has tried to improve this by triangulating your location from a number of sensors including GPS, WiFi, Cellular, etc. However, this issue could be coming to an end soon as Broadcom has just unveiled a new GPS chip that is said to bring 30-centimeter accuracy. Most GPS chips in smartphones today claim to be within 5 meters of accuracy when it comes to determining your location. As mentioned, Android tries to improve this by using data from other components in your smartphone. For instance, you’re only using the GPS sensor in your smartphone if you have the location mode set to Device Only. A lot of people will bump this up to Battery Saving mode though and it will try to figure out your location using WiFi, Blueto

Google Home App & Google Assistant Now Help You Discover New Commands via Search Box (First and Third Party)

Image
When Google Home was announced last year, the company was trying to catch up in a market that had been dominated by Amazon. Many Google and Android fans rejoiced when the device was finally released and it was actually able to surpass Amazon’s Echo in a number of features (primarily when asking questions). However, trying to figure out which commands worked on the Google Home connected speaker (and even Google Assistant) has not always been the easiest thing to do. Many Android publications were trying to publish their ‘definitive list’ of commands for the device. While that was a decent attempt at providing a service to the community, many abandoned it and weren’t keeping it updated. Sometimes this was at no fault of their own though because even Google wasn’t maintaining a list of commands that you could do with Google Home. They put up a landing page for it that offered a few commands, and eventually we had some examples included in the Google Home application itself.

Chinese-backed Investment Firm Acquires Imagination Technologies for £550m

Image
Imagination Technologies hit mainstream success when Apple chose to use their technology in the iPhone. For years Apple would design their own CPUs while licensing Imagination’s PowerVR GPU technology in the company’s A series chips. This obviously was quite a successful partnership for them, but just like the custom CPUs that Apple uses, they eventually decided to design their own GPUs as well. This year we saw three new iPhones announced that decided to move away from Imagination’s PowerVR GPUs. We first learned about this split up earlier this year and it resulted in the company’s shares dropping by nearly 70% overnight. When you’re making money hand over fist like that, it can be easy to forget that you have put all of your proverbial eggs in one basket. You can see how devastating it was for the company to hear that Apple would not be licensing the company’s GPU technology anymore. This resulted in Imagination Technologies’ June announcement about how they have put the

Silence Premium.ver.2.15e.build.297.apk

If you forget to mute your phone and calls rings or notifications chime during important meetings or wakes you up at night then this Do Not Disturb app (DND) is for you. Enable Calendar and Night mode and forget about having to play with volume control to silence your phone. Several features set this app apart from others in the category. This application was written with security in mind. As such it requires just a few permissions to read user's contacts calendar and to send and receive SMS. Most other apps require network permissions and some need access to SD storage which allows them to transfer any of the personal data from the phone unnoticed. This app can't do that so you can rest assured that your personal data is safe. This app offers a lot more than Do Not Disturb Mode on the iPhone or Samsung’s Blocking Mode: * It can silence the phone for the night and/or during office hour meetings or calendar appointments * Instant silent mode timer can be s

Apple now lets you rent movies from iTunes for 48 hours in the US

Image
Apple has -- at long last -- given the US what people in other parts of the world have enjoyed for a while: the ability to rent movies for 48 hours. Previously, renters in the US had a mere 24 hours to work their way through a movie after starting it, but Apple has now doubled this timeframe. It means that interruptions are now far less likely to mean that you need to re-rent a movie. While this is not a major change, it's one that will be welcomed by people in the US who have been frustrated by the limitation that was previously in place. The parity with other countries will also please those keen for things to be the same from one country to another. Over on the iTunes support pages, Apple explains about the rental period: You have 30 days to start watching a movie after you rent it. After you start watching the movie, you have 48 hours to finish it. You can watch the movie as often as you like until it expires. If you don't start watching a movi

Warning issued: Russia tried to hack election systems in at least 21 US states and was successful in some

Image
Russian hackers successfully compromised election systems in some states during the 2016 election. There have long been suggestions that Russia tried to influence the outcome of the Trump vs Clinton election, and now the Department of Homeland Security has informed 21 states that their systems were targeted. This means that the DHS has concerns about almost half of the states of America, but so far only Illinois has been confirmed as having been successfully compromised. While states including Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington were targeted, most of the attempts to infiltrate systems were unsuccessful. Homeland Security also stresses that none of the systems that were attacked were used to count votes. The attacks have been attributed to "Russian government cyber actors," and there

Sailfish X (Sony Xperia X) Build Instructions Released

Image
A few months ago, Jolla and Sony teamed up to bring Sailfish X, a port of Sailfish OS, to the Sony Xperia X as part of the Sony Open Devices Program. Coming officially on September 27th, it will cost €49.90, roughly $60, and have quite a few problems which we’ll get into in a bit. For those unfamiliar with Sailfish OS, it’s an operating system for mobile devices combining the Linux kernel, Mer core stack of middleware and a proprietary UI made by Jolla. Many developers have taken on the challenge of porting Sailfish OS to popular devices, including the Nexus 5 and OnePlus One. If you’d rather not pay for a compiled flashable image of Sailfish X (which by the way, Jolla suggest using a Linux computer to flash it to your device if you purchase it), then you can actually compile it yourself! Jolla has released build instructions if you’d rather build it yourself, however, the process will seem slightly convoluted if you are a beginner. What’s more, the list of problems that ar

DxOMark Published Their Camera Review of the Xperia XZ Premium (New Protocols), Scores it an 83

Image
There are times in which DxOMark is able to get a camera review out for a smartphone before it’s even released, and then we have those cases where it can take months before something comes out. The company recently revised the way they handle their mobile camera reviews and this week marks the first Sony device to go through these new review protocols. DxOMark has just published their camera review of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium and they gave it an average score of 83. Interestingly, DxOMark also caught the attention of both iOS and Android fans alike when they published their review of the new iPhones today. The iPhone 8 Plus was able to obtain a score of 94 with these new scoring metrics making it the best smartphone camera the team has ever tested. So many have been wondering how the Sony Xperia XZ Premium would fare, especially considering the device was initially released back in June of this year. While many OEMs use Sony’s sensors and are able to achieve great cam

The “Check for Update” Button Now Always Shows Available OTA Updates on Nexus/Pixel Devices

Image
It always sucks when you have to wait for a new OTA update to finally reach your device before you can get the new features and bug fixes that come with it. For some, this has resulted in manually sideloading an OTA update or flashing system images onto devices. A software engineer at Google has just confirmed that this should no longer be necessary as long as you are on a current version of Google Play Services. The OTA update process is generally a mystery to the average Android user. Even if they go in and manually tap the Check for Update button, they’re told their phone is up to date (even if it isn’t) because of the way Google and many OEMs handle things. Three years ago, a Google software engineer popped into /r/Android during a discussion about the Android 4.4 KitKat OTA update rollout and revealed how the company does their gradual rollouts. Back then, we were told that 1% of eligible devices get the new update for the first 24 to 48 hours. During this time Goo

Google Chrome Gets VR Web Browsing Capabilities for Daydream, Starting with Chrome 61

Image
It’s pretty evident that Google is completely invested into making their Daydream VR platform a compelling alternative to other competing virtual reality platforms like Samsung’s Gear VR. They eventually want most (if not all) Android flagship phones to be Daydream-certified in order to make Daydream the go-to virtual reality platform for Android devices. And with the release of yet another Daydream View headset in the horizon as well as updated requirements, it’s clear that they’re betting big on this platform. With the latest release of Google Chrome, they’re expanding Daydream’s capabilities even more. Chrome team member François Beaufort has taken to Google+ to announce that VR web browsing capabilities are coming to Chrome, with basic support already coming with the latest Chrome 61 stable build. This Google Chrome release allows users to view and interact with pretty much any website in VR mode, as well as allowing users to follow links between pages, and move between

Google to Make its Dialer App More Useful with Notification Actions

Image
Google has slowly been adding more features to its dialer application over the last few years and many have appreciated the work they’ve done. This becomes even more important with their renewed focus on hardware thanks to the Pixel phones as they are actively looking to make it commercial success. We have found a new AOSP commit that shows the company is looking to add a some more useful notification actions in the Google Dialer application. Google isn’t just dedicating time and resources to their main dialer application though. Earlier this month we showed you that the company is finally pushing out some major updates to the AOSP Dialer application. The AOSP Dialer has been sitting at version 10 for seemed like forever, but a recent push bumped it all the way up to version 13. This specific update shows they were working to add a floating buttons while you’re in a call and we showed you how to manually enable the feature on your device right now. So Google is continui

OnePlus Brings its Launcher, Community, Weather and Gallery Apps to the Play Store

Image
For a long time, OEMs have relied on pushing out OTA updates to bring new features of some pre-installed applications to their users. This allowed for those applications to continue receiving new features and bug fixes while still maintaining their system application status. However, a lot of them simply do not need to be installed as a system application so we’ve been seeing a trend of these OEM applications being uploaded to the Play Store. Today, OnePlus has announced they are bringing four of their in-house applications to to Google Play so they can push out updates faster to their users. We won’t see a time in which OEMs will push all of their 1st-party applications to the Play Store, but it certainly makes sense for a lot of them. Using this new OnePlus announcement as an example, there just isn’t a reason for them to limit updates for the Weather or Gallery applications to OTA updates. This results in it taking the company longer to get bug fixes and new features out

Google Announces Headphones Optimized for Google Assistant, Starting with the Bose QC 35 II

Image
The name Bisto was originally thought to be a codename for a specific product, and at one point we speculated it was simply a pair of headphones that Google was handing out to their employees. As it turns out though, Bisto is the codename for an entirely new product line that is being integrated into Android. These connected headphones are said to be receiving a big push from Google with their own dedicated support page. Leaks pointed to the first of this new product line being from Bose and today Google has made these headphones official. Details of the Bose QuietComfort 35 II headphones leaked exactly one week ago when 9to5Google received confidential documents about them. They didn’t have anything to show off in their original article though, but they were able to confirm that Google Assistant would be built-in and you would have the ability to “control music, send & receive texts, and get answers using just your voice.” All of this was handled with a new, dedicated

Imagination Technologies Announces the PowerVR Series 2NX Neural Network Accelerator

Image
The next big trend in mobile hardware, or at least mobile silicon, is to bring Artificial intelligence directly to your smartphone, thanks to neural networks. Google has been improving their machine learning technology for a while now, but this lives in the cloud and while it is more powerful, it also requires an internet connection and is considered slower for basic tasks. We’ve seen Qualcomm as well as Huawei announce their neural network components in their SoCs and today Imagination Technologies has done the same with their new PowerVR Series 2NX Neural Network Accelerator (NNA). Imagination Technologies had a number of announcements today including the PowerVR Series 9XE and Series 9XM, but it’s the Series 2NX Neural Network Accelerator (NNA) that has caught people’s attention. This new technology will provide SoC designers with dedicated low-power hardware for use with their neural network computation and inferencing. While this may not be something that can be utiliz

FCC Documents Indicate the Nokia 8 with 6GB of RAM is Coming to the U.S.

Image
HMD Global has been reviving the Nokia brand since they announced their licensing agreement and many have been patiently waiting for their flagship smartphone. The Nokia 8 was officially announced last month but there was some details left out about all the markets it would be made available in. Initial reports indicated that it wouldn’t be released in the United States but then we started to see rumors that claimed the exact opposite. With the 2017 Nokia flagship being released in multiple countries around the world already, fans in the United States were left wondering which reports to believe. The company’s official response was that it would be released “globally”, but avoided saying the United States when they were questioned about it. Instead, HMD Global chose to focus on the countries it was actively launching in at that time and even confirmed their devices would be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo. The initial rumor about the Nokia 8 being released in the United Sta

Motorola Moto X4 is the First Android One Device in the U.S., Available on Project Fi

Image
At the tail end of last month Motorola officially announced the latest phone for their Moto X series: the Moto X4. This was big for fans of the Moto X lineup as Motorola didn’t release a device last year due to the transition they were having with Lenovo. Early this year the folks over at Project Fi were teasing a new hardware partner and a rumor suggested it would be Motorola. Today, Google has officially unveiled that the Moto X4 is the newest smartphone that supports Project Fi, and it’s also the first Android One smartphone for the United States market. As you may already know, Google’s Project Fi is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) that sources its connectivity from three different wireless providers in the United States. Depending on where you are located and what the signal strength is on your phone, your Project Fi smartphone could connect to three different providers during your car ride to work. Until now, only Google Nexus and Pixel phones officially sup

Google Announces a Trade-in Program for Project Fi Customers

Image
When Project Fi was initially announced, some felt the fledgling MVNO would not last very long. However, Project Fi is still kicking, and has even added U.S. Cellular to their list of growing participants. Today, Google has announced that they are partnering with a couple of 3rd-party companies to bring a trade-in program to customers to buy a smartphone from their Project Fi service. Trade-in programs are gaining a lot of popularity as people are wanting to upgrade to the latest and greatest smartphone without the hassle of selling their old devices. Some companies even offer trade-in programs as a way to build good will after their previous product flopped. A lot of people stick to a 2-year upgrade cycle here in the United States due to contracts, but at the end of that 2 year period many people feel the itch to go for an upgrade. So rather than spending upwards of ~$650 (or more, if the latest Google Pixel 2 XL leaks are true) for a smartphone, or you could trade-in

Huawei Mate 10 Lite Specifications, Renders, Launch Date, and Pricing Revealed

Image
Huawei has been teasing the upcoming Mate 10 lineup since the end of last month. Since then, details have slowly been coming in thanks to various rumors and this has given us an idea of what we can expect from the upcoming flagship series from Huawei this year. Today, a new rumor from Evan Blass (better known as @evleaks) at VentureBeat has shed light on one of the smartphones in the Mate 10 series: the Huawei Mate 10 Lite. Last year, Huawei launched 4 different variants of their Mate 9 device which included the regular Mate 9, Mate 9 Pro, Mate 9 Lite, and the Mate 9 Porsche Design Edition. This year we have only learned details about three devices that are said to be a part of the Huawei Mate 10 series, though. We first heard of these three devices through their codenames, but the retail names have since been revealed to be the Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, and the Mate 10 Lite. Today’s report from VentureBeat tells us just about everything we can expect to learn about

“Can’t Talk” Lets You Auto-Reply to WhatsApp, Slack and More

Image
There are times in which you simply cannot (or should not) immediately reply to a message. However there are some social and professional messages that need at least something sent back to the other person, for both courtesy and acknowledgment. This is where an application called Can’t Talk from XDA Senior Member crazyfool_1 comes in handy as it enables you to set up auto-reply messages for a number of services including WhatsApp, Slack, Email, SMS and more. The developer does say that the app auto-reply features will become an in-app purchase once it leaves beta. But they will give those who are in the beta a promo code once the in-app purchase is added. Source : Xda Forum

Linux Mint 18.3 Ubuntu-based operating system is named 'Sylvia'

Image
Ubuntu 17.10 is almost here, and many Linux users are excited. Canonical's operating system is already excellent, but it will soon be even better thanks to a new default desktop environment -- GNOME. What this means for the Ubuntu-based Linux Mint's usage remains to be seen. You see, many people choose Mint because they do not like the Unity DE. Now that Ubuntu has ditched Unity, the reasons to opt for a distro based on Ubuntu rather than using "The Real McCoy" are dwindling. But OK, if you are still a diehard Linux Mint user for some reason, I have some interesting news. Version 18.3 is coming soon, and we now know the official code name. As is typical with the Mint operating system, a woman's name is being used. This time, "Sylvia" has been selected. Besides the name, we know some other interesting tidbits -- the distro will be getting a secondary default backup tool (Timeshift), and Xreader is being significantly improved. "Ti

How to disable the Bixby button on your Samsung Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+

Image
If you have a Samsung Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ you may well have a strong opinion about the dedicated Bixby button. For some people, one-click access to Samsung's digital assistant, Bixby, is a real boon -- for others it's just a pain in the butt. The positioning of the button is such that it is incredibly easy to hit it by mistake, such as when you try to press the volume down button. With a new update Samsung is finally making it possible to disable the button. You should find that the software updates automatically to give you access to the latest features, but you can force an update check. Press the Bixby button -- for what could be the last time! -- to call up the assistant and tap More Options followed by Settings. Hit About Bixby, and the update will be detected and downloaded if you don’t already have it. Back at the main screen, you should see a new toggle labeled: Bixby key Open Bixby Home when you press the Bixby key. Flick this toggle to

Majority of enterprise cloud services still not ready for GDPR

Image
With the EU's General Data Protection Regulation set to come into force in May next year, companies are rushing to ensure that their systems will comply with its rules. Yet a new report from cloud security company Netskope finds that almost three-quarters of cloud services still lack key capabilities needed to ensure compliance with the GDPR regulations. The study finds that the average enterprise has deployed 1,022 cloud services, down slightly from last quarter's average of 1,053. Of those cloud services in use, only 24.6 percent received a GDPR-readiness rating of 'high', based on attributes like the location where data is stored, the level of encryption and data processing agreement specifics. "Cloud adoption is an inevitability and has enormous business value for enterprises across all geographies and verticals. It also introduces a new set of complex security challenges in the enterprise, with regulations like the GDPR one of the more
